Top labelling

What is top labelling?

Top labelling means applying a label to the top surface of a product or pack. It describes the required label position rather than specifying whether the label is pre-printed, printed on the line or applied by a particular type of machine.

  • Top labelling describes where the label is applied: the upper surface of the product or pack presented to the labelling point.

  • Equipment selection also considers product dimensions and format, line speed, available footprint, existing-line integration, conveyor requirements and any vision checks.

  • Product handling can create the spacing, orientation and stable presentation needed before a label reaches the top surface of the product.

  • Label applicators, label printers and print-and-apply systems perform different functions and should not be treated as interchangeable equipment categories.

What does top labelling require from a production line?

A top-labelling setup needs the product or pack to present its upper surface consistently at the application point. Product dimensions, stability, line speed, available space and the existing conveyor arrangement influence how that position is achieved.

Product and pack presentation

The defining requirement is clear and consistent access to the upper surface where the label will be applied. Product type, dimensions and format therefore matter when deciding how the pack reaches and passes through the labelling point.

Where products arrive with inconsistent spacing or orientation, product handling can provide spacing, alignment or stabilisation before application. These are supporting line functions rather than part of the definition of top labelling itself.

Line integration and inspection requirements

Line speed, available footprint, existing-system integration and conveyor requirements influence how the top-labelling equipment fits into the production line.

Vision is a separate consideration. Where the process requires checks for label presence, position, print quality or code readability, vision inspection can take place after application, with reject equipment added where required.

Which equipment functions are relevant to top labelling?

Top labelling establishes the application position first. The required equipment then depends on whether the line needs to apply an existing label, print a label, combine printing and application, or control product presentation around the labelling point.

Label application

A label applicator applies a pre-printed pressure-sensitive label to a product or pack. In a top-labelling setup, the applicator must be configured so the label reaches the required upper surface while the product is correctly presented at the application point.

Printing and print-and-apply

An industrial label printer produces the label but does not by itself determine where that label will be applied.

A print-and-apply system combines printing and application when variable information needs to be produced and applied as part of the same automated process. The IMA Labelling Fleximate series includes configurations for top-surface applications, alongside other application positions.

Product handling around the application point

Handling equipment becomes relevant when product presentation is the constraint. Conveyors, spacing devices, orientation equipment or stabilisation can help the product arrive consistently beneath or beside the chosen labelling equipment.

Inspection and rejection remain separate downstream functions where the production process requires verification after the label has been applied.

How does top labelling differ from a label applicator?

Top labelling describes where the label must be applied; a label applicator describes equipment that performs application. Printing may be separate or combined through print-and-apply, while product handling prepares the pack for consistent application.

Position requirement versus application equipment

The top surface is the placement requirement. A label applicator is one equipment category that can fulfil it. The same applicator category may support other label positions depending on the equipment configuration and product presentation.

Printing and application functions

Printing is a separate equipment decision. A label printer produces the label, while print-and-apply combines printing with automated application. In either case, “top labelling” still refers to the surface where the label is placed.
