What is a Data Matrix code?
A Data Matrix code is a two-dimensional matrix barcode made from dark and light cells arranged in a square or rectangular pattern. It encodes text or numeric data.
The code uses an L-shaped finder pattern and a timing pattern to help locate and orient the symbol. In ECC 200, Reed-Solomon error correction helps recover encoded data when parts of the symbol are damaged.
At a glance:
- The L-shaped finder pattern helps locate and orient the symbol. An alternating dark-and-light timing pattern indicates the number of rows and columns.
- ECC 200 uses Reed-Solomon error correction and supports square or rectangular symbols.
- Maximum ECC 200 capacities are 3,116 numeric characters, 2,335 alphanumeric characters or 1,556 bytes.
- Data Matrix is an automatic identification and data capture technology used for logistics and production marking.
How is a Data Matrix code structured?
A Data Matrix structure gives a reader visual information for finding the symbol and identifying its grid. ECC 200 adds a defined error-correction method, while symbol size and encoding determine how much data the code can carry.
Finder and timing patterns
The L-shaped finder pattern sits along the symbol edge and helps a reader locate and orient the symbol. An alternating dark-and-light timing pattern indicates the number of rows and columns, helping the reader identify the symbol’s grid structure.
ECC 200 and error correction
ECC 200 uses Reed-Solomon error correction to help reconstruct encoded data when parts of a symbol are damaged or difficult to read. The available error correction depends on the symbol configuration, so it should not be treated as one universal damage-recovery or scanning-performance percentage.
Actual reading performance still depends on the code, presentation and reader configuration; a KEYENCE barcode reader is one example of equipment designed to read a wide variety of codes under changing operating conditions.
Symbol format and data capacity
Data Matrix symbols may be square or rectangular. The maximum ECC 200 capacities are 3,116 numeric characters, 2,335 alphanumeric characters or 1,556 bytes.
These are maximum encoded-data capacities for the relevant data types, not promised reading performance.
Where is a Data Matrix code used?
Data Matrix is used as automatic identification and data capture technology in logistics and production marking.
In production environments, identification systems can combine barcode scanning and vision functions where codes need to be captured as part of a wider identification or inspection process.
Production and logistics applications
Applications include items used for transport in logistics, parts in production and identification within repair processes.
Where codes need to be captured automatically at a fixed point, fixed mount barcode scanners can provide hands-free reading within a production-line setup.
How does a Data Matrix code compare with a QR code?
Data Matrix and QR Code are both two-dimensional matrix codes. Their main differences include finder-pattern design, capacity, available symbol formats and the way error correction is configured.
Finder-pattern design
Data Matrix uses an L-shaped edge pattern, while QR Code uses finder patterns at three corners. These patterns provide a visible structural distinction between the two code types.
Capacity and symbol range
The maximum ECC 200 capacities for Data Matrix are 3,116 numeric characters, 2,335 alphanumeric characters or 1,556 bytes. For square ECC 200 symbols, sizes range from 10 × 10 to 144 × 144 modules; rectangular formats are also available.
QR Code supports maximum capacities of 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes at its lowest error-correction level. Standard QR Code sizes range from 21 × 21 to 177 × 177 modules.
Error-correction characteristics
Data Matrix ECC 200 uses Reed-Solomon error correction built into the selected symbol configuration. Its error-correction level is not selected by the user in the same way as QR Code.
QR Code provides four configurable error-correction levels, allowing the required balance between data capacity and error-correction capability to be selected for the application.
Error correction should also be kept separate from broader vision inspection, which can assess barcode readability and other visible product or packaging criteria.
What is the GS1 DataMatrix?
GS1 DataMatrix is a specific implementation of Data Matrix within the GS1 system, with defined requirements for encoding, printing and reading.
A generic Data Matrix code is not automatically a GS1 DataMatrix implementation. Keep the wider Data Matrix symbology and the specific GS1 implementation distinct when defining a system requirement.
For related manufacturing context, see the GS1 2D codes guide.
ALS Identify barcode readers for Data Matrix codes
For production lines that need to read Data Matrix codes, ALS Identify supplies barcode readers for machine-readable code reading. Define whether the requirement is code reading alone or formal verification when discussing the application.
